Shackleton Centenary Expedition

Antarctic Music August 19 2008

One of the ways of breaking up the monotony and routine before it takes over is music. This is crucial over the course of approximately 80 days cross-country skiing in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.

Everyone will be taking an ipod - agreed by everyone as a necessity rather than a luxury item. Here is a selection of what Will be listening to whilst he's down in Antarctica:

"The music I listen to will include blues:

Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Charlie Patten , Robert Johnson - all delta bluesmen

BB King, Hounddog Taylor, Leadbelly, Johnny Shines, Fleetwood Mac, Lightning Hopkins, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Allman name a few.

Jazz: Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins (many blue note label records); also some early trad, incl Sydney Bechet, Louis Armstrong etc

Lots of reggae (Congos, Marley, Augustus Pablo, Jacob Miller), Americana (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Grateful Dead, Phish, Jefferson Airplane), Folk (Dubliners, Country Joe and the Fish, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Joan Baez) punk etc

Favourite song: Jimi Hendrix, - all along the watchtower

Generally a very eclectic collection - but also some audiobooks, incl Alfred Lansing's Endurance, the twelfth man, the Flashman books.

Possibly even a film or two - yet to be confirmed."
