ITEMS FROM HENRY WORSLEY'S POLAR COLLECTION
This photograph, one of my favourites, was taken for a San Francisco newspaper in November 1916 when Ernest Shackleton and Frank Worsley were attempting to raise funds to rescue the Ross Sea Party. It was a bruising task for them both as the world was focussed on the Great War and little else. Shackleton wrote to his beloved Emily, "I have simply been up to my eyes in work trying to get money here but it has been no go". It had been "beastly work".
That feeling of exasperation can be seen on the faces of these two men and I cannot help thinking what they must been through. The toll of the extreme hardships of the Endurance expedition and the gamble of the boat journey can, I believe, be seen on their faces and offer a rare glimpse of the two great men outside the more formal portraits and group photographs that are more well known.
